Local Hospice Lottery player wins £2,000 while giving back to her local hospice

For Angela Enever, playing the Local Hospice Lottery has always been about supporting a local cause close to her heart. Winning a £2,000 prize was an unexpected bonus.

When Angela Enever received a phone call telling her she had won £2,000 on the Local Hospice Lottery, her first thought wasn’t excitement; it was suspicion.

“I thought it was a scam,” she laughed. “I told them I wasn’t coming to collect a cheque and they’d have to send it to me.”

When the cheque arrived, Angela could hardly believe it.

But for the South Kirby grandmother, the win means far more than the money.

Angela has been playing the Local Hospice Lottery for the past nine years, ever since her daughter Anna received care at the Hospice before sadly dying at the age of 38.

“I’m forever grateful,” said Angela. “They made Anna so comfortable. Nothing was too much trouble. Anna used to say it was the next step to heaven.”

At one of the most difficult times in their lives, Angela says the Hospice’s care extended beyond Anna and embraced the whole family.

Anna’s son Finley was just nine years old when he lost his mum. In amongst the sadness and uncertainty, hospice staff helped create precious memories that Angela still treasures today.

“They made his last memory incredible,” she said. “There was a party, cakes and games. For a little boy who was about to lose his mum, those moments were so special.”

Following Anna’s death, Angela and her husband became Finley’s guardians. The years that followed were filled with school runs, family holidays and supporting their grandson as he grew up.

“Everything has been about Finley for years, as it should have been,” said Angela.

Which is why her lottery win feels so special.

For nearly a decade, Angela has faithfully supported the lottery, knowing that every ticket helps local families facing some of life’s toughest challenges receive the same care and support her family experienced.

Now, with Finley older and more independent, Angela can finally think about treating herself. “This money is really for me,” she said. “I haven’t decided exactly what I’ll do with it yet. Maybe I’ll buy some jewellery or something I wouldn’t normally treat myself to.”

Although she’s delighted to have won, Angela says the real reward has always been knowing she’s helping the Hospice continue its work.

She regularly supports our Light up a Life appeal and donates in Anna’s memory on birthdays and anniversaries.
