A new superstore is coming to Pontefract!
We’re excited to share that The Prince of Wales Hospice will be opening a brand-new Pontefract superstore on Wednesday 6 May 2026.
The new shop sits in the former Wilko building next to Argos. By moving from our Cornmarket location, we can offer a larger, brighter and more accessible space in the town centre. As a result, more people will be able to shop with us and support local hospice care.
The extra space means we can offer more high‑quality stock and a much improved shopping experience.
As we prepared the new store, we put sustainability at the heart of our plans. Our team reused fixtures and equipment from the existing Pontefract shop wherever possible. In addition, we made use of items already in the building and accepted donated fittings.
When we needed new items, we made thoughtful choices. We balanced quality, sustainability and cost because we want to use charitable funds wisely. By doing so, we ensured that more income goes directly towards patient care.
Thanks to the larger space, we can now offer a wider range of pre‑loved items. At the same time, the refreshed layout makes browsing easier and more enjoyable.
Importantly, the new superstore will welcome more visitors and accept more donations. In turn, this will help us raise vital income to support our free, specialist care for people across the Five Towns.
Kevin Hogarth, Retail Operations Manager at The Prince of Wales Hospice, said: “Relocating to this larger, more modern site gives us the chance to create a vibrant, welcoming store that really meets the needs of local people. The extra space means we can offer more high‑quality stock and a much improved shopping experience, which in turn helps us raise the vital funds our Hospice relies on. Every purchase made in the new superstore plays a part in supporting local patients and their families.”
Could you volunteer with us?
With the new superstore operating on a larger scale, we’re looking for 25 new volunteers to help support its day‑to‑day running.
To give people the chance to find out more, we’re holding two relaxed volunteer recruitment sessions at the new shop:
Monday 20 April 2026, 1pm–3pm
Wednesday 22 April 2026, 1pm–3pm
1–3 Salter Row, Pontefract
You’ll be able to learn more about roles including customer service, sorting donations and visual merchandising. No experience is needed; if you can offer a few hours a week, we’d love to hear from you.
You can apply online at www.pwh.org.uk/volunteering or call 01977 708868 for more information.
