Inpatient hospice care

Round-the-clock specialist care in a comfortable, supportive environment when symptoms become more complex.

Care focused on comfort, dignity and quality of life

Our inpatient unit provides specialist care for people with life-limiting illnesses who have symptoms that can’t be managed at home or in hospital and need a period of 24-hour specialist care.

Our aim is to maximise the quality of life for people using our services. Alongside medical treatment, we care for emotional, psychological and spiritual needs, supporting overall wellbeing and helping each person make the most of their physical abilities.

We also support the people close to them, making sure families feel informed, included and cared for too.

Expert care from a dedicated team

People staying in our inpatient unit are cared for by a highly skilled, compassionate team that may include:

  • Consultants and doctors

  • Specialist nurses

  • Healthcare assistants

  • Therapists

  • Other members of our wider healthcare team

Together, we provide expert treatment, symptom management and holistic care tailored to each person’s needs.

What Inpatient hospice care includes

  • Specialist symptom control and medical care
  • Nursing care 24 hours a day
  • Emotional and psychological support
  • Support from the wellbeing team, including activities and therapies
  • Spiritual care if wanted
  • Support and guidance for family members

When inpatient care is needed

A stay in our Incare unit may be needed when:

  • Symptoms such as pain, breathlessness or nausea are difficult to manage at home

  • More detailed assessment or adjustment of treatment is required

  • A person is approaching the end of life and wishes to be cared for in the hospice

Many people come to the Hospice for a short stay to get support with a specific issue. Once their condition is more stable, they may return home with ongoing support.

The Hospice is also here to care for people at the very end of their lives, ensuring they are comfortable, supported and surrounded by compassion and dignity.

A comfortable and homely environment

Comfort and privacy are extremely important to us. All our inpatient rooms are private and designed for one person, with enough space for friends and family to visit — and stay if needed.

Each room includes:

  • An ensuite bathroom

  • A television

  • Views and access to our beautiful hospice gardens

Rooms are decorated to a high standard to create a calm, homely atmosphere.

In addition, there is access to a larger bathroom on the ward with a relaxing Jacuzzi-style bath, helping support comfort and wellbeing.

Support for families

We understand how important it is for family and friends to feel welcome and involved. Our team supports loved ones as well as patients, offering guidance, emotional support and space to spend meaningful time together.
