Our Lymphoedema Team are encouraging local people to access the service if they experience signs of swelling linked to the condition known as Lymphoedema.
Lymphoedema affects an estimated 400,000 people in the UK and can have a significant impact on a person’s quality of life. The condition, which causes swelling in the body, often affects mobility, physical appearance, and mental well-being. While cancer treatment is one of the most common causes, lymphoedema can also result from genetic factors, injury, trauma, or infection.
What is Lymphoedema?
Lymphoedema occurs when the lymphatic system, responsible for fluid drainage in the body, is compromised, leading to fluid build-up and swelling. This swelling is most commonly found in the arms and legs but can affect other areas of the body as well. People who have undergone cancer treatments, particularly for breast, pelvic, or prostate cancer, are often at higher risk, but the condition can affect anyone.
Our Clinical Director, Stephanie Gillis, explains:
“Lymphoedema results in swelling of body tissues, usually in the arms and legs, although it can affect other areas too. People may notice swelling, difficulty fitting into shoes or clothes, and jewellery feeling tight on their fingers. If left untreated, the condition can worsen over time. We encourage anyone experiencing these symptoms to visit their GP for a referral to a Lymphoedema clinic, or they can self-refer directly to our service.”
The Support We Offer
Lymphoedema can be a challenging condition, but with the right support, it can be managed effectively. Our Lymphoedema Team provides a range of services to help patients self-manage their condition, including guidance on the use of compression garments, skincare, exercise, infection prevention, fluid drainage techniques, and weight management.
We currently care for approximately 700 patients and offer the service through our main clinic. Additionally, we hold an outreach clinic every Tuesday at the Rosewood Centre in Dewsbury, making it easier for local people to access our expert care.
Michelle, who has been using our service since 2019, shared her positive experience:
“The service has been extremely helpful. The advice I’ve received has been invaluable. My condition is well monitored, and I feel supported by the team. It’s a fantastic service.”
