Our Hospice celebrates our amazing volunteers during Volunteers Week

12 June 2026

Our Hospice is marking Volunteers’ Week (1–7 June) by celebrating the incredible contribution of our amazing volunteers, whose compassion and dedication support patients, families and the wider community every day.

More than 300 volunteers play a vital role across the Hospice, from welcoming visitors on reception to supporting patients on the ward and helping run our ten busy charity shops.

As part of Volunteers’ Week, we’re sharing volunteer experiences that show the difference this support makes to patients and families.

Julie, a Wellbeing Volunteer, first connected with the Hospice in 2022 when she donated a robotic dog in memory of her mum. After seeing the comfort it brought during her mum’s final days, she wanted others to experience the same sense of peace. Alongside a full-time job and family life, she began volunteering at a craft group before moving to the Inpatient ward.

She now supports patients through conversation, quiet companionship and Reiki. “This is where my heart is,” Julie says. “If I can help, even in a small way, to make someone feel less alone, then it means everything.”

Jackie, a Shop Volunteer in Knottingley, was inspired to give back after her husband was cared for at the Hospice. “I wanted to do something meaningful,” she says. “Volunteering here felt like the right thing to do.” She enjoys meeting people and being part of a supportive team, helping to raise vital funds.

Karen, one of the friendly faces on reception, welcomes patients, families and visitors with warmth and care.

I find it so rewarding to give my time to such a very special place

Together, volunteers like Julie, Jackie and Karen show the many ways people can support the Hospice. Every role helps create a compassionate and supportive environment.

We are encouraging anyone thinking about volunteering to take the first step. With flexible opportunities available, it is a rewarding way to give back and make a real difference.
