Dave and Alex's story

Dave and Alex met on a night out in Pontefract over 10 years ago and have been together ever since.
They live in Featherstone and have a large extended family. They have both lived a full and varied life both together and apart and now love nothing more than just being together watching their favourite television shows. “When we met” Alex told us “I wasn’t having the best time but I guess that’s when you find what you’re looking for, when you’re not looking.”

Dave has lung cancer and is receiving palliative care.

When the Hospice’s Wellbeing Team learned about the couple's desire to tie the knot, the Wellbeing Team sprang into action and managed to arrange the wedding within a couple of days. With the help from our Wellbeing Team, Julie Liptrot from The Palliative Care Team and the local registrar we were able to help make this wish come true on Monday 9 October, just three days before Dave’s 77th birthday!

They said: “We couldn’t believe it would happen so quickly. Jo Dunford was brilliant organising everything for us. Jo Lister arranged for the Pontefract and Featherstone Hospice shops to pull our outfits together. There wasn’t much notice but they pulled it all off, it was a brilliant day.”

The couple had a small ceremony at their home in Featherstone with a handful of guests. Dave said: “I saw a vision of an Angel walking towards me she looked lovely, it was Alex. It was such a special day for us.” Alex added “one that we’ll remember”.

Dave was looked after on our Incare in the new year and he commented on the services: “The care and services available here are first class. We can’t fault a thing”.

We’re so happy we could play a small part in Dave and Alex’s special day!
