Ted Cumberland – Our dedicated catering volunteer

29 May 2026

For the past ten years, Ted has been a valued and dependable volunteer within the Caring Kitchen at The Prince of Wales Hospice.

Every Wednesday, without fail, Ted arrives ready to help, bringing not only his time and hard work, but also a calm and reassuring presence that has made him an integral part of the Hospice team.

Working behind the scenes in both the staff and ward kitchens, Ted plays a vital role in helping the catering team run smoothly. From keeping kitchens clean, organised and well stocked to tackling endless piles of washing up with a smile, no task is ever too much trouble.

Greg Staric, Head Chef of the Caring Kitchen at The Prince of Wales Hospice, said:

Ted has been an outstanding volunteer in our hospice kitchen for the past ten years. His commitment and reliability are truly remarkable. He has become an integral part of our team, and his presence brings a sense of calm and reassurance to both staff and patients.

Ted’s dedication allows the catering team to focus on providing the very best experience for patients and families, knowing the kitchens are being cared for with pride and attention to detail.

Greg added:

“Beyond his practical contributions, Ted embodies the spirit of compassion and service that defines our hospice. His dedication over the last decade reflects not only his generosity of time but also his genuine care for our community. We are incredibly fortunate to have Ted as part of our team.”

While much of Ted’s volunteering happens quietly behind the scenes, his impact is felt every single day by staff, patients and visitors alike. His kindness, consistency and generosity have made him a hugely appreciated member of the Hospice community.

In recognition of his years of dedicated service, Ted was nominated for Room to Reward, a charity created to recognise volunteers who make a meaningful difference within their communities. His nomination celebrates not only the practical support he gives each week, but also the kindness, compassion and positivity he brings to the Hospice kitchen team every single Wednesday.

Volunteers are at the heart of The Prince of Wales Hospice, supporting departments across the organisation and helping ensure patients and families receive outstanding care and support. Ted’s commitment over the last ten years is a powerful example of the difference volunteers make every day.
