Gillian’s story: A special 70th birthday celebration at our Hospice

4 April 2025

Gillian has been a dedicated supporter of the Hospice for many years, always giving to others. As her 70th birthday approached, she never imagined she would be celebrating it in the Hospice.

Gillian has lived with Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) for many years, unfortunately, she was then diagnosed with lung cancer four years ago. She was the primary carer for her husband at home, but after a severe chest infection, she realised she needed special support herself.

When she arrived for symptom management, our team discovered her 70th birthday was just days away. Wanting to make it truly special, our Wellbeing team arranged a beautiful afternoon tea in our garden room. It was a perfect opportunity for Gillian to mark this milestone with her family and friends over tea and delicious cakes.

What could have been a difficult time turned into a heartwarming and joyful occasion. Surrounded by her loved ones, Gillian marked the milestone with a special afternoon tea, filled with laughter, love, and treasured moments. Gillian said: “Being able to celebrate my birthday with my family and friends gave me a really good lift. “People who come into the Hospice can still continue with their daily lives.”

Surrounded by her daughters, son, grandchildren, and close friends, Gillian shared stories and laughter, turning the Hospice into more than just a place of care. It becomes a place filled with love, joy, and treasured memories.

“I wouldn’t hesitate coming again if I needed to. It’s been better than expected, I’m well rested, all my needs have been met, and I’ve been told I look 20 years younger from when I first arrived, so I’ll take that!”

During her stay, Gillian worked closely with Chris, our Occupational Therapist, to prioritise tasks at home and prepare for her return. John, our Physiotherapist, liaised with the respiratory team at the hospital to help her better manage her COPD. Through their support and expert care, Gillian is regaining her strength and is preparing to return home.

For Gillian, the Hospice didn’t just provide much-needed medical care but also special memories and a renewed sense of independence. As she prepares to return home, she feels ready to take better care of herself, continuing to live life at her own pace, cherishing every moment with her loved ones, and possibly enjoying a little more cake.
