Volunteers are at the heart of our retail team, helping to raise vital funds that support local patients and families. For 17-year-old Ethan, volunteering at our new Pontefract Superstore started with a simple decision: to give something new a try.
Ethan explains: “I’m originally from Portsmouth and now living in Pontefract. I have just completed my first year studying Games Design at Wakefield College. While looking for a part-time job, I came across an advert for volunteering with the Hospice and decided to give it a go.”
“Since joining the team, I have gained experience across many different areas of the shop. I started behind the scenes, I learned how donations are sorted, tagged and prepared for sale. Then I moved into a customer-facing role on the shop floor and helping on the till, which I love.”
Now volunteering two days a week, Ethan enjoys the variety of the role and being part of a busy team, meeting customers and helping to create a welcoming experience in the Superstore.
The Pontefract Superstore is the newest addition to our network of 10 charity shops across the Five Towns area. Every donation, purchase and volunteer hour helps generate income that supports the specialist care and services we provide across our communities.
For Ethan, volunteering has offered more than just practical experience. It has given him the opportunity to meet new people, develop new skills and build confidence while supporting a cause that makes a difference locally.
When asked what he would say to someone considering volunteering, his answer is simple:
Why not? That’s my motto through life. If you have the time, why wouldn’t you? It helps people and yourself.
That positive attitude is something Ethan brings to every shift. Whether he’s preparing stock behind the scenes or helping customers on the shop floor, his enthusiasm and willingness to get involved make him a valued member of the team.
We’re incredibly grateful for the time, energy and positivity Ethan gives to the Hospice. His story is a reminder that volunteering can be a rewarding way to gain experience, build confidence and give back to your community, whatever your age.
