“All staff went out of their way to make the birthday special” – Shaun and his family’s story

17 August 2026

When Shaun came to the Hospice, his family were made to feel welcomed and comfortable from the very start.

The care and support they received helped them focus on what mattered most, being together and supporting Shaun. During such a difficult time, the Hospice also helped the family create special memories, including a wonderful celebration for Shaun’s grandson, Tobias’ seventh birthday.

Shaun, from Ossett, has a loving and supportive family. His wife, Sharon, and his daughters, Carly and Sophie, visit every day, making the most of every precious moment together. The family is also busy preparing for Sophie’s wedding to her fiancé Farren, coming up in September, and another grandchild on the way.

When Tobias, Shaun’s grandson, turned seven, the Hospice team helped make his birthday extra special by giving the family the space and support to hold a celebration at the Hospice. The family organised party food from The Caring Kitchen, along with a birthday cake and gifts. The Hospice team joined in the celebrations and gave Tobias a teddy bear, which he absolutely loved.

Afterwards, Tobias told his mum:

“It was the best day of my life.”

Carly said:

Everyone was so amazing. They went out of their way to make it special for him, and he loved the teddy bear he got from the nurses.

The support from the Hospice has helped the whole family. Shaun’s wife, Sharon attended Reiki sessions.

“It helped me relax. I became more chilled.”

Carly and Sophie also received support from the Hospice counsellor.

“We could open up and talk about everything.”

Shaun came to the Hospice from Pinderfields Hospital after being diagnosed with gland cell cancer. The family had heard wonderful things about the Hospice through recommendations and quickly understood why.

When he first arrived, Shaun was feeling very low. Carly remembers:

“Dad was so depressed when he got here, and they turned him around.”

The family are full of praise for the staff and the care they have received.

Shaun said:

“The recruitment is outstanding. To employ such great-quality people who are compassionate and go above and beyond is incredible.”

For Shaun and his family, the Hospice provided much more than care. It gave them comfort, support and precious memories together and made every moment count.
