Charitable Trusts

The Prince of Wales Hospice in Pontefract is proud to be supported by generous Trusts and Foundations who help us deliver free, high‑quality hospice care to people across the Five Towns

Trusts & Foundations supporting The Prince of Wales Hospice

For more than 30 years, charitable funders have helped us provide specialist medical care, wellbeing support, equipment and improvements to our Hospice so local families can live well and die well.

Working in partnership with both small and large funders, we use grants to support everything from essential medical items and garden spaces to major capital developments. Every grant makes a meaningful difference to patients and families in the Wakefield district.

Highlights from our trusted funding partners

In recent years, we have been grateful for the support of several incredible Trusts and Foundations, including:

  • The Albert Hunt Trust – providing unrestricted funding for our core hospice care.
  • The Morrisons Foundation – supporting our patients through funding for essential medical equipment, including syringe drivers.
  • The Sylvia and Colin Shepherd Charitable Trust – helping us deliver compassionate care for local people at every stage of life.
  • Hospice UK – offering long standing support that helps us reach more people in the Five Towns.
  • Wakefield Council – funding our beautiful summerhouses, giving patients a peaceful space to relax close to nature
  • The Pavers Foundation – supporting the purchase of recliner chairs for our 14 bedrooms, as well as contributing to our running costs.
  • The James Tudor Foundation – generously funding our specialist nurses on our Incare Unit.

These partnerships strengthen our services and ensure that local people receive the care and dignity they deserve.

Funder story: Bridging the gap in Featherstone

This community led approach proved that early intervention, local presence and trusted relationships can transform access to care. We are deeply grateful to Hospice UK for making this impact possible.
Thanks to funding from Hospice UK, we’ve have been able to reach more people in our community who didn’t believe they had access to hospice care. Together, we have worked to ensure that everyone, regardless of their background or location, has access to high-quality care. We were delighted that Hospice UK agreed to fund this initiative in Featherstone, where 60% of residents live with chronic illness, because it tackled health inequalities head-on, specifically addressing the barriers faced in post-industrial communities.

By moving out of a clinical setting and into the heart of the community at Featherstone Library, the Hospice has transformed how local people perceive and access support. The impact has been outstanding. While we initially hoped to reach 90 people, the project has supported over 215 individuals, successfully engaging groups that are traditionally harder to reach, including men and younger people.

This project is a shining example of how community-led outreach can dispel myths and provide early intervention. Thank you to Hospice UK for their constant support.

What we are currently seeking funding for:

Defibrillators

As vital piece of medical equipment, having a defibrillator on site means our medical team can respond instantly if someone’s heart stops. A defib needs to be replaced every seven years to ensure that it stays in quality condition, ready for an unexpected moment which gives reassurance to patients and families. A Mindray C1A Defibrillator costs £693.

Wellbeing With Patient
Wellbeing activities

Our Wellbeing Service hosts a multitude of sessions for our community, whether it be exercise groups, drop-ins, Future Planning sessions, craft groups, as well as complementary therapy and bereavement counselling. These activities take place both at the Hospice and out at public venues easily accessible for our community. It costs around £2,200 to keep the core essence of our Wellbeing Service running throughout the year, as well as buying materials for specific activities.

Green Retail

Part of our 2026-29 Strategy is to continue improving on our sustainability goals, following installation of 136 solar panels in 2023. We need to upgrade our ageing retail van to something greener – an electric one! With over 88,000 bags of donations given every year, we need a reliable mode of transport to get them all to our 10 charity shops. We’ll eliminate over 4.5 tonnes of CO2 per year and save £3000 in fuel alone. Our retail team also bring in 35% of our income for hospice care, which is a fantastic return on investment!
