Honouring Carers at Windsor Castle

On Wednesday 11 February 2026, Their Majesties, The King and Queen, opened the doors of Windsor Castle for a very special reception celebrating carers from across the United Kingdom. The event brought together individuals from every corner of the caring community, including foster carers, young carers, NHS staff, unpaid family carers and many more, shining a spotlight on the extraordinary support they provide and the quiet, often unseen, difference they make every single day.l

Among those invited were three remarkable carers, attending on behalf of our Hospice alongside our Wellbeing Counsellor, Dawn Hannan.

June Lockwood and Kate Thrower, both long-standing and deeply valued Hospice volunteers, proudly represented the compassionate spirit at the heart of our organisation. They were joined by Elaine Wood, a dedicated member of Dementia Carers United, a collaborative group of organisations committed to learning from the lived experience of people with dementia and their carers, with the aim of shaping more responsive, meaningful support for families.

The reception gave the attendees a rare chance to pause, reflect, and feel truly appreciated for the care they give so generously. From conversations with fellow carers to the honour of being recognised by Their Majesties, the day offered moments of pride, connection, and heartfelt gratitude.

We are incredibly proud that June, Kate, and Elaine could represent our Hospice and our local area at such a meaningful national celebration. Their invitation reflects the dedication of all our volunteers, carers and colleagues, and we are delighted to see their vital work honoured on such a prestigious stage.

Carers make an extraordinary difference every day, and you can help us continue supporting them. Whether you’re interested in volunteering, donating, or simply learning more about the work we do, your support helps us reach more families in need.
