Silver Birch planted at our Hospice as part of the Queen’s Green Canopy
We have been kindly gifted a Silver Birch tree as part of the Queen’s Green Canopy by The Lord Lieutenant of West Yorkshire. The High Sheriff of West Yorkshire led the official tree planting ceremony on Saturday 10 December.

The Queen’s Green Canopy is an initiative that began in May 2021 in honour of the Platinum Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II in 2022.

The Lord Lieutenant of West Yorkshire, Mr Ed Anderson CBE, received a small number of trees for distribution in West Yorkshire. He very kindly allocated a Silver Birch tree to our Hospice, which was part of a spectacular 21-meter sculpture featuring 350 British Trees erected outside Buckingham Palace as a centerpiece for the Jubilee celebrations.

The ceremony took place before our Light up a Life service in the Hospice gardens, at the ceremony were the Mayor and Mayoress of Wakefield Councilor David Jones and Mrs Annette Jones, Hospice Patron Duncan Wood, Reverend Tracy Ibbotson, Hospice Board Chairman Gordon Tollefson, Board Trustee Steve Dibb, Hospice CCEO’s Sharon Batty Sam Calvert and Jo Schofield and Support Services Manager Tracy Carr.

Gordon Tollefson, Chairman of the Board here at The Prince of Wales Hospice said: “It is a real honour to have had this Silver Birch allocated to us by The Lord Lieutenant of West Yorkshire, and to be a part of the Queen’s Green Canopy in memoriam, to honour Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. As it grows it will continue to remind our community of Her Late Majesty.”

Our Hospice gardens are spectacular, thanks to our amazing volunteers. It is a place for our patients and their families to enjoy and spend time together and it is also a place of reflection.
