The Bate family support this year's Light up a Life
The Bate family will be supporting Light up a Life this year in memory of their loving father, Des. They will be
taking part in one of the services of remembrance and fundraising for the appeal. They ask people in the local community to support the appeal by making a donation and if possible, to attend one of the services.

Des Bate was a loving, caring, kind man who looked after everyone he knew. Originally from Sunderland, Des moved to the area as a small child as his dad was a miner. He left school at 16 to join the world of work, going on to own his own bed shops. Managing big stores, he truly had a passion for business and sales. His children would join him every week at car boot sales, where he would teach them everything about his job and the importance of working hard.

Des’ son, Dan, says, “It would be so special waking up early on a Sunday morning, driving a few hours in the van, singing and laughing. We had a great time.” Emily, Des’ daughter, also recalled unforgettable family holidays in Scotland with him, where they were able to make memories to last a lifetime.

In January 2017, Des became ill with a chest infection. Tests and scans resulted in Des’ diagnosis of renal cancer which had sadly spread. As his illness progressed and his condition rapidly deteriorated, Des was admitted to the Hospice for help with his care. Whilst in the Hospice, Des and his family were able to make everlasting memories, sharing stories and laughter.

Des’ family have since expressed their gratitude to the Hospice staff and volunteers for providing such a caring and positive atmosphere. The Hospice is unable to add days to life, but we help patients and their families to add life and joy to their remaining days together. Des and his family were even able to enjoy some time in the beautiful setting of the Hospice gardens.

His children say, “When dad moved to the Hospice, we were able to take him out in the gardens for some fresh air. The Hospice seemed more like a home than a clinical environment. This was so important for us.”

After just eight weeks, Des died comfortably and peacefully whilst surrounded by his loving family. He was just
45 years old. Since his death, Des’ family remained dedicated supporters of the Hospice. They continue to
support the Hospice, through fundraising and volunteering.

Des’ children say, “We will never forget the care our dad received. It was amazing and we were able to
create lasting memories, for which we will be eternally grateful. The Hospice helped take care of our
dad and gave him the best care and support they could.”

Emily says, “Donating to this fantastic cause does make a real difference. Everyone went above and
beyond making things easier and as a family, we can’t thank them enough.”
