Meet Janet, our Wellbeing Volunteer
The Wellbeing Team has recently welcomed Janet as one of their newest volunteers.

With over 20 years of experience in the Careers Service and several more in customer service roles, Janet has always been dedicated to helping others. Recently, she decided to channel that passion into volunteering at our Hospice, and she hasn’t looked back since.

Janet said: "I had heard really good things about the Hospice. Being local, I had always known what an amazing reputation it has.”

When Janet first visited the Hospice to inquire about volunteering opportunities, she was warmly greeted by a member of the People & Culture team. They walked her through the various roles available. "Straight away, being in the Hospice felt so right. Coming in, it was like a lovely embrace, it was so warm and welcoming. I really felt an immediate sense of belonging.”

Not long after this, she was introduced to Jo Dunford, our Wellbeing Lead. Janet said: “Jo is a truly lovely person. She radiates warmth.”

Janet received training from Jo and other members of the Wellbeing Team. This covered topics such as the various roles and opportunities open to volunteers, as well as ways that the Hospice can support our volunteers.

Janet thoroughly enjoyed this training. "Jo was constantly checking in with us, seeing what we thought and whether we were okay with everything. She gave a lot of reassurance that, as a volunteer, I’m not going to be on my own. If ever I was unsure about anything, I could ask and get the help I need."

Janet began her volunteering journey with our Coffee & Chat Drop-In sessions, held at Notcutts Garden Centre, where she works alongside Jo Lister, our Activities Coordinator. "I love working with Jo. The sessions are so successful, and we seem to have more and more people there with each week that passes.”

Janet’s positive experience has inspired her to recommend volunteering to others. "It’s so much fun, and a great way to meet new people. You don’t have to worry about being a particular type of person. There is a role for everyone. As long as you care, that is the only thing that matters.”

Janet’s warm personality, dedication, and a deep sense of care make her a valued member of the team. We’re fortunate to have her on board, and we hope her story inspires others to consider joining us in making a difference.
