Hospice celebrates Doosan Day of Community Service
A team of volunteers from the engineering specialist, Doosan Backcock, mark the fourth Doosan Day of Community Service, by supplying and erecting a new greenhouse at The Prince of Wales Hospice.

The world-wide initiative involves over 10,000 Doosan Babcock employees volunteering their time and resource to projects in their local communities. The scheme supports charities in over 16 countries, including the UK, Poland, Middle East and Hong Kong.

Employees from Doosan Babcock, based at both Ferrybridge C and Eggborough Power stations, joined the Hospice for a second year to lend a hand in the Hospice gardens. Preliminary works took place on Thursday 14 April, in preparation for the day of community service on Friday 15 March.

Doosan Babcock Site Manager, John Jagger, who led this year’s project at The Prince of Wales Hospice said: “It’s a fantastic opportunity to be able to take time out from our day-to-day jobs and really give something back to the local community. The Prince of Wales Hospice provides valuable support to the more vulnerable members of our local community and it’s a humbling experience to help them create a positive environment for patients. It’s also a great opportunity for Doosan Babcock colleagues to come together in what is a really valuable teambuilding exercise.”

The new green house will be used to grow fresh vegetables, which will be used to prepare meals for patients and their families.  Last year, the team got their hands dirty and built an allotment, which is maintained by gardening volunteers at Hospice.

Tracey Mearns, Partnership Development Co-ordinator at the Prince of Wales Hospice said: “Thank you to John and his team for their continued support through the Doosan Day of Community Service and their fundraising activities. We were delighted to welcome them back again this year to supply and erect our new greenhouse, which will enable us to grow even more fruit and vegetables.”
