The invaluable role of family support services in hospice care

5 February 2024

In the world of health and care, hospices stand as sanctuaries of compassion. Supporting patients facing life-limiting illnesses and caring for their families is a cornerstone of any care strategy.

Hospices provide crucial services that support families alongside the needs of patients with life-limiting or terminal illnesses. These services address the emotional, psychological, and practical needs, and help family members to feel supported in the care they give to their loved one.

This article explores what family support involves and why it is a crucial aspect of hospice care.

Beyond medical treatment: A holistic care approach

At the core of hospice care is the fact that we do far more than just administer medical treatments or manage symptoms. Instead, hospice care extends its scope to foster an environment where individuals and their families find solace in trying times.

Family support forms the heart of this approach, acknowledging that the journey through a life-limiting illness is not a solitary road but a collective journey that includes the entire family unit.

Emotional support: Providing comfort and compassion

Emotional support plays a vital role in family involvement in hospice care. The journey through a life-limiting illness is emotionally challenging for both the patient and their family members. Hospices recognise this and provide a range of services to help families cope with these emotional strains.

Family support is a steadfast anchor, offering comfort, empathy, and compassion during these challenging times. It provides a safe space for emotional expression, allowing families to navigate their fears, uncertainties, and grief with the assurance of being heard and understood.

At The Prince of Wales Hospice, our Wellbeing Team offers one-to-one or small-group support so that family members can speak about their challenges and gain practical advice. We also have Coffee & Chat drop-in sessions where family members can chat with others who are caring for a loved one and discuss any worries or difficulties they may face.

Psychological tools: Building strength through support

The psychological toll of a life-limiting illness on both the patient and their family members cannot be understated. Family support in hospice care extends far beyond lending an empathetic ear; it equips families with coping mechanisms and strategies to navigate the psychological challenges that accompany such illnesses. It empowers them to manage adversity.

Practical assistance: Bridging the gap

From physical support to household chores and financial guidance to navigating complex healthcare systems, family support fills the gaps, alleviating the burdens that arise during this challenging phase of life.

At The Prince of Wales Hospice, our social worker provides a session called “Putting your ducks in a row.” This is an excellent opportunity for patients and their families to plan for the future, including financial plans. We also have a “Ducks in a Row” booklet, which has a lot of important and practical information and helps to gather all of the patient’s key documents and information.

Impact on overall wellbeing: Nurturing comfort and dignity

The holistic nature of family support in hospice care nurtures an environment where individuals facing life-limiting illnesses are not just recipients of medical care but are treated with comfort and dignity.

It fosters an atmosphere where their wishes are respected, their voices heard, and their emotional and practical needs are addressed with the utmost compassion.

In summary

Family support is an indispensable facet of hospice care, illuminating the path for individuals and families as they navigate the complexities of life-limiting illnesses. Its immeasurable value lies not in providing physical care but in cultivating an environment where empathy, compassion, and practical assistance converge to create a sanctuary of comfort and support.

As we continue to recognise its significance, we ensure that every individual facing life’s most challenging moments finds solace and support, not just in medical intervention but in the unwavering embrace of family-centred hospice care.
