Meet Poppy our Wellbeing Volunteer
Our volunteers are an essential part of our work here at the Hospice and we are very grateful to them. We want to shine a spotlight on the amazing work they do. Meet Poppy, one of our Wellbeing volunteers.
Poppy is a local college student and during the holidays she volunteers with our Wellbeing team helping out at various groups, including the Friday afternoon craft group.
Poppy said: “Volunteering at the Prince of Wales Hospice has exceeded my expectations. Initially, I saw it as an opportunity to gain some work experience to help prepare me for a career in medicine – I imagined it would be supporting people at end of life. What I found was a safe, warm space of shared stories, laughter, and resilience. And although the hospice does provide excellent care for people at the end of life, it also has an expansive outreach program that connects with lovely, interesting individuals and gives them companionship, activities and support; demonstrating the far-reaching impact that volunteering can have on people’s lives.
I found volunteering at the hospice a very enriching experience and I receive more than I give – and I hope to be able to continue volunteering there in the future!”
Recently Poppy and her mum hand made a variety of earrings which they kindly donated to the Hospice to sell at our Winter Fair back in November.
“We thought it would be a good idea to sell them at the Hospice’s Winter Fair to try and raise as much money as possible for a worthy cause.”
We’d like to thank Poppy for her incredible support to our Wellbeing team. Jo Dunford Wellbeing Lead said: “Poppy first started volunteering with us in the Summer during her collage summer holidays, then returned again this October and December. Poppy is always friendly and polite and has even been teaching some of our craft group attendees how to knit. Thank you for being a Hospice Hero.”
