Learning Disability Week at the Hospice
Learning Disability Week took place between 20-26 June and we were really excited to take the opportunity to connect with people with learning disabilities and organise some activities with them.

We hosted the first face to face Patient Experience Group (PEG) meeting.  The PEG is a group of people with learning disabilities, who participate to share their experience, have their voice and feedback to different health organisations.  We have been part of the PEG for some years and we are really grateful for all their contribution.

During the pandemic the meetings were held online. This time, it was lovely to be able to see people face to face, have a nice conversation and of course, enjoy the fabulous homemade cake from our kitchen.

Following on from the meeting, we held a craft session for service users, their carers and colleagues. We painted fairy doors which were taken home by the participants to put in their gardens. Everybody enjoyed the craft session.

Another activity we organised was with Millennium Support, who provide help for adults with learning disabilities.

We have a good connection with the Millenium Support, and their members come to the Hospice every Tuesday morning and do gardening.

On Learning Disability Week, beside the usual watering, digging and other gardening jobs, we set up a craft table for the participants and they had the opportunity to decorate and paint craft hearts. They loved the activity and they proudly took their hearts home.

They also got involved in setting up a beautiful flower display in the lawn.

Jo Lister, our Wellbeing Co-ordinator said: “We are very proud of our community links and celebrating Learning Disability Week with them. We got many people with learning disabilities involved and we look forward to organising more activities in the future.”
