Margaret's story

Margaret Grimshaw suffered a fall and was taken to hospital for her injuries. After a couple of nasty infections, it was thought that she might benefit from the one on one care our Hospice can provide.  Prior to this, Margaret had been diagnosed with breast cancer in November 2019 and was receiving palliative care for the illness.

Soon after arriving at our Hospice, she felt very settled and was enjoying her private room and views of the Hospice gardens.

She said: “I’m from Worsbrough in Barnsley and hadn’t heard of The Prince of Wales Hospice before but I was reassured it was a lovely place to be, and it really is. The level of one-to-one care provided is second to none. Everybody has been so friendly and caring.”

Whilst receiving specialist care on our ward, Margaret was also working with our Wellbeing team to improve her strength and independence. Our Physiotherapist, John helped her with exercises and her physical condition gradually improved. Jess, our Social Worker checked on her regularly and found out what mattered to Margaret - she wanted to get strong to attend her daughter, Andrea’s upcoming wedding.

Jo Dunford said: “When we heard about the wedding, and how close it was, we knew we had to do something for Margaret and Andrea. We thought we would organise a surprise hen do for the family, here at the Hospice, so mother and daughter could share these very special moments. Margaret was thrilled as it was a complete surprise.”

Andrea, Margaret’s daughter said: “I can’t thank the staff enough, it’s been really special evening and I appreciate it so much.”

Margaret added: “I’ve been so well looked after, and I couldn’t ask for better treatment. The food has been wonderful and they have gone out of their way to make sure I’m taken care of. I’m going to live with my daughter which will be lovely, but it will be quite sad to move on.”
