Sandra's story

You may recognise Sandra from our recent Aviva Community Fund campaign, where we asked supporters to vote for us to receive a £25,000 grant, to fund physiotherapy for patients who struggle with fatigue and breathlessness. Sandra suffers from breathing difficulties herself, she tells us in her own words about the support she has received from The Prince of Wales Hospice.

“The Hospice provides help and support to patients with breathing difficulties that isn’t available anywhere else; having weekly access to medical staff gives me peace of mind.

All the staff and volunteers are caring and compassionate. When I was first referred to the Hospice by my GP I was unsure what to expect and prior to attending Day Therapy I thought The Hospice would be a gloomy place and associated it with end of life care. I agreed to attend once and see what it was like; I couldn’t believe how wrong I was. Day Therapy provides the chance to meet other people with similar illnesses who know how you’re feeling.

After my time attending Day Therapy was complete I felt scared that I would no longer receive the care and monitoring. My condition deteriorated further and when the respiratory nurse suggested referring me back I didn’t hesitate. My first session back was like ‘returning home’, I’ve even enjoyed doing craft activities which is something I would never have tried had I not been here.
The Day Therapy weekly sessions have been and enormous help to me, more than words can say.”
