Your kindness can bring joy to a carer's Christmas

Give someone caring a chance to rest, connect and breathe this Christmas

The Reality of Christmas for Carers

At Christmas, many people look forward to time with loved ones. But for someone caring for a relative with a life-limiting illness, the season can be exhausting and isolating.

While most of us slow down, carers continue with early mornings, sleepless nights, medication routines and hospital visits. Their love is constant, but the cost to their own wellbeing can be significant.

How the Hospice Helps

The Hospice’s Wellbeing Team provides carers with a rare chance to rest, connect and breathe.

Support includes:

  • gentle exercise classes that bring movement back into their day;

  • craft sessions that encourage conversation; and

  • drop-ins where someone finally asks how they are coping.

Many carers feel guilty taking a break or simply cannot afford paid support.
That’s why all wellbeing services remain free of charge — and why your kindness matters so much.

"At the Hospice, they ask me how I am doing"

June knows how important this support is. When her husband Brian suffered a series of strokes and heart attacks, she became his full-time carer overnight. The days grew long and lonely, and she felt like she had lost her independence. Everything changed when she joined our Wellbeing sessions.

“Being a carer can be very isolating,” June said. “People ask about the person you care for, but not about you. At the Hospice, they ask me how I am doing and that makes me feel like I am a person again.”
