Mighty Swim Success

Friday, 24 February 2017
In Sept 2016, "The Mighty Swim" team successfully completed a swim of 4 of the biggest Lakes in The Lake District in 4 days, a distance of over 30 miles. The challenge raised a much needed £8233.19 for the Prince of Wales Hospice.

The driving force behind the event was Steve Brondel who invited veteran swimmers Carl Baxter and Ryan Maple on board to complete all 4 swims. The event soon gathered pace with other swimmers, Craig Roberts and Steve Aston taking on a new discipline with relish. Most inspiring of all were the three youths Max Ludwig, Charlie Skelding and Joe Brondel who all completed the length of Derwent water in horrendous conditions. The whole event was supported by safety canoeists Pat Smith and Kate Simper.

The team were able to exceed their goal of £6000 due to the generosity of friends, family and local businesses who sponsored the event including a weekly fund raising quiz at the Tap and Barrel in Pontefract courtesy of landlord Dean Smith.

The proceeds will help the Prince of Wales Hospice to continue their work in supporting terminally ill people and their families in this outstanding facility.

Events and Community Fundraiser, Alice Coggan said: "The teams committment to their challenge has been incredible. I'm so pleased they exceeded their target and it's great they came up with such an innovative idea!"
