Wellbeing services

Our Wellbeing Team offers a range of services available for carers and families. The team also offers wellbeing support to anyone in the community within the Five Towns area of Wakefield District.




 

Our aim is to maximise the quality of people's life by optimising physical function and emotional wellbeing.

Our care is holistic, looking after the whole person. 

Our experienced team includes Wellbeing Lead, Wellbeing coordinator, Wellbeing Support Worker, Social Worker, Complementary Therapy Lead and Physiotherapist.

We organise the below activities and group sessions to anyone who needs support:

  • MONDAY, 10.00- 11.30 AM

    FAMILY AND FRIENDS SUPPORT GROUP (AT THE PRINCE  OF WALES HOSPICE)

Do you help care for someone? We offer a friendly listening ear with the experience to offer practical advice and support. Booking is required.
 

  • MONDAY,  1.30 – 3.30 PM

    COFFEE  & CHAT DROP-IN  ( FEATHERSTONE ROVERS, THE MILLENIUM STADIUM, WF7 5EN)

Come and say hello in the cafe and meet the Wellbeing team. You can’t miss us, we have a big Wellbeing banner. It is a good place to find peer support and find out more about the various services the Hospice has to offer. All welcome, no booking involved. (Please, note this session will not be held on bank holidays.)

 
  • TUESDAY, 2.00 – 3.00 PM

    COMPLEMENTARY THERAPY GROUP (AT THE PRINCE OF WALES HOSPICE)

Complementary therapy sessions can help with relaxation and symptom management such as stress, poor sleep, anxiety and pain management. Our treatments should not be seen as a replacement for conventional medicines, but they can help to boost emotional wellbeing during difficult times. Booking is required.

There are three different sessions to experience, which will occur on different Tuesdays through out the month and you can book onto them via the information below. 

  1. Self-care -  Taking time to do things that help you live well and improve wellbeing.

  2.  Light touch - In this session you will learn about the benefits of gentle hand massage. These skills can be a soothing way of helping with stress and anxiety.

  3. Relaxation -  This session can help with anxiety, stress, poor sleep and some symptom management such as pain and breathlessness. Through meditation and visualisation, stress can be better managed and energy increased.

  • TUESDAY,  1.00 – 3.00 PM

(Plus the café sells delicious cakes.)(Please, note this session will not be held on bank holidays.)

  • WEDNESDAY, 10.00 – 11.30AM

    WELLBEING INFORMATION SESSSION (AT THE PRINCE OF WALES HOSPICE)

There will be the opportunity to attend various information sessions. You can attend one or more of the sessions that will occur on different Wednesday mornings of the month. Booking is required.

  1.  ‘Putting your ducks in a row’ – This information session is presented by our social worker who will offer advice on how to plan for the future. It can include information about benefits and how to find out about writing a Will. These sessions will be friendly and with lots of opportunity to ask questions.
    We have a "Ducks in a Row" document for you, which  helps you put all important and practical information together about your life. You can find a downloadable version here or just ask the Wellbeing Tream for a beautiful printed copy.

  2. Managing breathlessness – It is support and practical advice regarding managing the symptom of breathlessness. This sessions aims to help give back some control to those with issues of breathlessness. The session will be presented by our hospice physiotherapist.

  3. Reducing the risk of falling at home- This session will give practical advice on a difficult and often very worrying subject. These sessions will be presented by our physiotherapist. There will be plenty of time for questions and advice.

  4. Nutrition and Wellbeing - We give advice regarding managing diet at home and tips around food preparation.  Practical advice and discussion to help those who are experience poor appetite. This session will be presented by the Wellbeing Lead. It will also contain lots of useful advice about managing to help someone with meals who is cared for in bed.

  • WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON

    BATHING SERVICE (AT THE PRINCE OF WALES HOSPICE)

Unable to access a bathing facility, let us help you with your hygiene needs here at the Hospice. You can bring a carer to assist you or we can provide staff to help you. Enjoy a relaxing bathing experience where your privacy and dignity will be maintained. A service provided to help you maintain your personal wellbeing. The service can be accessed once every two weeks for a small charge  Complementary Therapy may be arranged for your carer at the same time. This service will be a booking in system and information is at the bottom of this page regarding how to do this. The bathing service costs £15 each session. Booking is required.

  • THURSDAY 10.30 AM - 12.00 PM 

       WALKING FOR WELLBEING (VARIOUS LOCATIONS)

The walk allow everyone to enjoy the benefits that sociable walking provides for physical and mental wellbeing.
Our walks are for people with all abilities and wheelchair accessible. The venues may change and the session is dependent on the weather. Booking is required.

  • THURSDAY 1.30 - 2.30 PM

    CHAIR EXERCISES (YOUR SPACE PONTEFRACT, PARK RD, WF8 4PR)

They are a fun way to improve physical function while having a laugh with a peer group. Rehabilitation for patients is now recognised as an essential part of the clinical pathway. It is generally accepted that patients should have access to an appropriate level of rehabilitation, so that they can function with a level of independency and maximise their quality of life. There is wheelchair access.  Booking is required.

  • FRIDAY 10.30 AM - 12.30 PM

    CRAFT GROUP (AT THE PRINCE OF WALES HOSPICE)

Activities and craft therapies with an emphasis on enablement. Art can be a distraction from everyday life, it can be an escape from stress  and overwhelming situations. Crafts and diversional therapies help to keep attention on the present and help to relax the body and mind. Producing something gives a sense of self-worth and achievement. We believe in empowering patients and enabling them to do as many things for themselves as possible. We make art accessible to all people. Booking is required.
