Complementary Therapies are non medical supportive techniques that can:
Promote relaxation
Help reduce anxiety
Provide time to let go of tensions
Provide a space to recoup and facilitate coping mechanisms
Create distraction from some stresses and symptoms
Complementary Therapies are not provided as an alternative method of treatment and do not replace conventional medical treatments.
Complementary Therapies are available to Patients and Carers while on Incare, attending Day Hospice and on an appointment basis.
The main focus of a Complementary therapy session is to achieve the above goals and our Complementary therapists will use a variety of techniques to help to achieve this. Techniques used may include:
We do not offer full body massage as it is not appropriate. Massage can be given dry through clothing or with an oil or lotion. Massage can be performed at various depths and speeds appropriate to the individual. Reflexology may be utilised for some individuals. Massage is contraindicated in some cases.
Essential oils can be used in a treatment area to help promote relaxation; they are a useful additive to massage when available however massage can be wonderful without them. Aromatherapy blends are used within our Incare unit and can be produced for individauls where a specific need had been identified.
This technique can be soothing and relaxing while involving no manipulation.
This provides the opportunity to relax, re-focus and unwind. These techniques involve no touch.
Where you can learn self help techniques such as hand massage and light touch, groups can be attended alone or with a partner/friend. Some groups will be relaxation and visualisation, some are just for fun.
